Dear Colleagues,

As we near the end of the calendar year, I have been reflecting on the Harvard Library. There’s much that is good and some things that are works in progress. You, library staff members, are a joy to work with. Everywhere I go, on my many library visits (my tally to date is 59), I have been welcomed by enthusiastic, intelligent and hard-working people. Dear Harvard community members:

I write to update you on the events that disrupted activities on the Cambridge campus today.

As I reported earlier, four buildings were closed this morning so that they could be searched by law enforcement officials and access to Harvard Yard was restricted. That step was taken out of an abundance of caution after an email was received at approximately 8:40 a.m. by the Harvard University Police Department and other community members, claiming that explosive devices may have been hidden at those four sites. I am relieved to report that no suspicious devices were found.

I would like to thank the HUPD and the many representatives of the local, state and federal agencies who responded to this incident. We deeply appreciate your help in keeping our campus safe.
