by library. Click here for
a list of links to information about specific libraries, including
their access policies.
E-Resources:
Access to most e-resources is restricted
to current Harvard faculty, students, and staff with a
valid Harvard ID and PIN.
FAQ for Visitors
What
is a PIN and how can I get one?
To use most electronic resources from outside of a Harvard library,
you will need to login with your Harvard ID and PIN.
To request a PIN, go to http://www.pin.harvard.edu.
PINs are delivered through your Harvard e-mail address or through
campus mail. If you are not sure whether or not you have a PIN,
request a new one. More information.
Why aren't e-resources or e-journals at E-Research @ Harvard Libraries
recognizing my Harvard ID and PIN?
Harvard Medical School and hospital affiliates: If you are experiencing
problems with access to electronic journals or other electronic
resources, please contact Countway Library through their
comments and
questions form. Alternately, you can reach their reference desk at
(617)432-2134 from 9:00 until 5:00 Monday through Friday.
A.
Most computers in the libraries at Harvard provide access
to resources without asking for an Harvard ID and PIN. Resources
are available for use outside of libraries (remotely) by current
students, faculty, and staff. Most special borrowers are not
allowed remote access, but they can use the special borrower ID
to gain entrance into a library from where they can use the resources.
B. It may be that it is not Harvard University that is
prompting you for a password. In certain circumstances, the e-resource
may not recognize you as a Harvard user and will prompt you, in error, to login.
If you believe this is happening, please bring it to a librarian's
attention or submit a comment using
the Harvard Libraries comment facility.
C. If your ID is new or has changed, our database
may not reflect the new information, yet. Please wait until 4:00 PM
on the day of the change. If your ID and PIN still do not work,
contact us using
the comment facility or call
the Widener Library Privileges desk at (617)495-4166.

Can I apply for or purchase temporary access to restricted resources
on E-Research @ Harvard Libraries?
Sorry, we are contractually obligated to limit access to
current Harvard students, faculty, and staff.
Browser
configuration
To use the
e-resources and e-journals at E-Research @ Harvard Libraries, your browser
needs to have cookies and JavaScript enabled.
You can increase the size of the text in Harvard Libraries
e-resources. When using Netscape,

Helper
applications
Many electronic
journals require the use of Adobe Acrobat for viewing full text.
You can download Acrobat for free from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html.
A handful of resources require a proprietary client, or plug-in. For information
about these applications, click on the link for more information
that appears next to the resource's title.
What
if I'm informed a resource has reached the maximum number of users?
Some e-resources on the E-Research @ Harvard Libraries site allow only a
limited number of simultaneous users.
Where
did that resource go?
We occasionally withdraw resources for a number of reasons: Some
resources are no longer available. Others are no longer free and
funding could not be found. Trial subscriptions sometimes expire
before a library sponsor for the resource could be found. If you would like
us to reinstate a resource, please
let us know.
Why
am I being redirected to a new URL? Why doesn't the new site work
properly?
Vendors sometimes change URLs (web addresses) without informing
us! If you encounter a URL change please
notify us
so we can update our database immediately. If access to the resource
is restricted, a URL change can and usually will break
our connection to the e-resource.
When
should I contact my local technical support or my Internet Service
Provider?
It is not easy to isolate specific symptoms that indicate whether the
problem is local to your network or your ISP. If we believe a problem
is caused by a firewall or a caching proxy, we will ask
you to contact your local support.
