| Access Information: | Officers of Harvard are permitted to use the library after receiving a visitor's card from the appropriate Director of Studies (call 202-339-6490 Mon-Fri, 9-5). Qualified outside scholars must request a visitor's card in advance of arrival. Visitor status is normally extended to scholars who hold doctoral degrees in Byzantine or medieval, Pre-Columbian, or Landscape Studies, or an M.A. in Landscape Architecture; and to currently enrolled doctoral students who have satisfied all course requirements and are writing dissertations in these fields. A candidate should submit a statement indicating the nature of the proposed research, a recommendation from a recognized authority in the relevant field, and evidence that the material requested is not available elsewhere in the Washington area. Scholars who do not qualify for visitor status according to the above criteria, but are working on a research project relevant to one of the three programs, may apply to the appropriate Director of Studies for special consideration. See www.doaks.org/research.html for more details. |

| Holdings Description: | Summary description of collection: The Library supports research in the fields of Byzantine studies, Pre-Columbian studies, and landscape studies and garden history. Size of collection: 205,000 bound volumes and more than 1,000 active serial subscriptions. Expanded description of the collection: The library contains research-level collections in its three areas of specialization. For Byzantine studies, the library collects all printed sources relevant to Byzantine history and civilization, as well as material on the antecedent cultures of Greece and Rome and the contemporary Slavic, Islamic, and Western Latin Societies in contact with Byzantium. Subject areas represented are: Art and archeology, epigraphy, numismatics, sigillography, paleography, papyrology, religion, law, philosophy, music, science, medicine, geography, and history. The Pre-Columbian studies collection thoroughly covers the art and anthropology of the cultures of Mesoamerica, the Intermediate Area, and the Andes of the pre-Columbian and early colonial periods. The garden and landscape studies collection focuses primarily on landscape and garden history of the western world, with the greatest emphasis on the U.S. and Europe. Publications addressing gardens of the China and Japan are gradually being acquired. The Garden Rare Book Collection is also largely concerned with gardens of the western world including material from the 17th century to the present. The Rare Book Collection also houses Beatrix Farrand's drawings and photographs for the Dumbarton Oaks gardens and an indexed collection of letters exchanged by Mrs. Bliss and Mrs. Farrand.
