Access Information:The Harvard Law School Library is an open stack library, with admittance and borrowing privileges for holders of Harvard ID cards. Admittance is available to qualified users who register (and in some cases pay a required fee) through the Circulation Desk, telephone 617-495-3455. Access to online services LexisNexis and Westlaw is limited by contract to members of the Law School community for educational purposes only.
Circulation Policy:CIRCULATION POLICIES: 1. Basic Privilege: Only designated monographs and treatises circulate. Most materials do not circulate, including periodicals, reference books, looseleaf treatises and services, and primary materials such as case reporters and laws. 2. Extensive Privilege (HLS FACULTY ONLY): Any items except reference titles and citators circulate. Document Delivery Service to HLS faculty on Cambridge campus. LOAN PERIODS: 1. Basic (registered Harvard students): 28 days with option to renew if not requested by another person. Recalled materials are due within 14 days of recall date. Renewals in person, by phone or HOLLIS. For phone renewal, call 495-3455. Items may be renewed 5 times. 2. Reserve Materials (Permanent and Course): 2 hours, renewable in person. AV Collection movies have 7 day loan. 3. Harvard Faculty and Officers: Semester Long; shorter loan periods for HLS Faculty who are eligible for borrowing journals and primary materials. Subject to recall as above. FINES: 1. General Circulation: .50 per day; 3-day grace period. 2. Recalls: 2.00 per day.
Holdings Description:Summary description of collection: The Law School Library contains Anglo-American legal materials in Langdell Hall and foreign, international and comparative legal materials in the International Legal Studies section. MATERIALS NOT HELD:Lawyer's practice manuals for states other than Massachusetts; current international relations materials; continuing legal education publications for most jurisdictions Size of collection:2 million volumes including over 600,000 monograph titles, over 20,000 serial titles, and about 48,000 microform titles. Expanded description of collection: Langdell Hall holds a comprehensive collection of Anglo-American treatises, court and agency reports, statutes, periodical indexes, and reference sets. The International Legal Studies section of the library has extensive holdings in international law, comparative law, and foreign law, including documents of international organizations. The Law School Library's Special Collections include unique American, English, and continental law books,legal incunabula, and manuscripts. The 30,000 item art collection includes portraits of lawyers and judges, prints, sculpture, and photographs.
Services:Internal ILL Policy: HARVARD: Law School Library lends circulating materials to other Harvard Libraries free of charge. The loan period is for the semester. There are no photocopying fees for other Harvard Libraries. ALA forms and fax requests are accepted.
