Access Information:Access is extended to holders of Harvard officer, student and staff cards, Widener special borrowers, Countway Library cards, Boston Medical Library fellows and Massachusetts Medical Society members, and to affiliated hospital employees. Other medical researchers are welcome, but those who are not directly affiliated with the Harvard or Boston Medical Library pay a 35.00 fee to use the library.
Circulation Policy:Monographs from the general collection may be charged out for a four-week period with the option of five renewals. Recalls of items charged out can shorten the loan period. NOTE: Periodicals do not circulate.
Holdings Description:Summary description of collection: The Library has an extensive biomedical collection. The periodical, rare book and manuscript collections are outstanding. MATERIALS NOT HELD:Secondary sources in the history of medicine (Widener Library) Size of collection: 600,000 volumes; ca. 4,000 periodical titles currently received Expanded description of collection: Of the modern collections, the Countway possesses especially fine runs of biomedical periodicals. These include both clinical and basic science materials. Of its older material, the library is rich in incunabula, in European books published from 1475 to 1800, and in American books issued from 1668 to 1870. New England imprints and Bostonia are particularly well represented.
Services:Internal ILL Policy: HARVARD: Countway Library lends all circulating materials and provides scanned articles to any Harvard library free of charge. Requests are accepted through OCLC code HMS, and ALA request forms by email to countill@hms.harvard.edu or fax to 617-432-1833. The lending period is six weeks, with one renewal. Items are subject to immediate recall if needed for course reserve. External ILL Policy: NON-HARVARD: Countway Library lends circulating materials to institutions in the U.S. and Canada and will provide photocopies, to institutions whether domestic or foreign. The lending period for books is six weeks with no renewals. The charge is $11.00 per medical network request, $18.00 for all others. ILL Borrowing Policy: BORROWING: Countway Library will borrow for patrons affiliated with the Harvard Medical School, the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, the Harvard School of Public Health, the HMS affiliated teaching hospitals, and for members of the Boston Medical Library and the Massachusetts Medical Society. Patrons must register for Countway Doc interlibrary loan accounts to use this service. Directions:The Countway Library, including the Rare Books and Special Collections Department,  is located in the Longwood Medical Area at 10 Shattuck St. Boston, MA 02115.

The Library is visible from Huntington Avenue between Longwood Ave. and Francis St. The Countway entrance is at the end of Shattuck Street, which runs parallel to Francis Street behind the Brigham & Women's Hospital (see map).

Parking convenient to the Countway is available as folows:
Street parking on Huntington Avenue @ $0.25 per 15 minutes, 2 hour maximum
Brigham and Women's parking garage on Francis Street
Children's Hospital parking garage on Longwood Avenue
