E-Resources Harvard Libraries

PIN and Harvard Libraries Electronic Resources

WHAT HAS CHANGED? In order to use Harvard Libraries electronic resources from outside of libraries, you now need to use a PIN and your Harvard ID number instead of your last name and Harvard ID number.
WHAT HAS NOT CHANGED? Access to the HOLLIS Catalog, VIA, OASIS or any other previously unrestricted resource still does not require login or PIN. Access to resources within library buildings do not require a login or PIN. Resources which are now limited to "on campus" use will change as a result of PIN migration, but we are working to eliminate this restriction for as many resources as possible. Ecommons accounts are unaffected. For help with eCommons please refer to http://www.hms.harvard.edu/it/ecommons/index.html.
WHY DID WE DO THIS? There are several reasons. University PINs are used for an increasing number of web systems such as online grades and term bill accounts. Fewer PINs are easier to remember. PINs will also provide a secure login method for the Reader Empowerment functions (reviewing books charged out, renewing books etc.) which will be available next year in the new Aleph catalog. PINs are much more secure than name and ID number.
HOW CAN SOMEONE GET A PIN? You can go to the web page http://www.pin.harvard.edu and request a new PIN. PINs will be delivered through your official Harvard email address or through campus mail. If you're not sure whether or not you have a PIN, request a new one. Because the PIN is secure, no one can look up your PIN for you.
WHO WILL HELP RESOLVE PROBLEMS WITH PINS? The University PIN has its own help site. First check the FAQ on page http://www.pin1.harvard.edu/faq.asp. If the FAQ page doesn't answer your questions, call the UIS Help Desk at (617) 496-9001 (M-F, 8-6) or send an email to pin_help@harvard.edu. If you have problems using Harvard Libraries electronic resources themselves, please use the Harvard Libraries Comment facility.
WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN? August 19,2001. You can get a PIN any time now. You will need it for e-resources on the Harvard Libraries site (lib.harvard.edu) if you are trying to get access from outside a library.
