Project Update: New Library Portal Staff Directory, Patron Preview

Staff members can verify, edit directory entry; add subject specialties and opt-in to take research appointments.

September 4, 2012—The new Harvard Library portal, designed to address challenges users face in accessing resources across Harvard’s libraries, will go live by September 30, 2012.

A key feature of the new Library portal is a Library-wide staff directory, which can be searched by staff member name, library name, School and subject specialties. Library staff members may update the job title and unit if they are incorrect, and change their privacy setting. Staff members can also add their roles and subject specialties. Those who select Research, Teaching and Learning as a role will automatically have their name added to a list of Research Librarians on individual library pages and who are available for research appointments. The other information that appears in the staff directory, like mailing address, email address, School, job title, etc. cannot be changed in the portal—please find comprehensive instructions on updating entries in the Library staff directory here.

A preview of the new site was shared with the Library community on August 21, and the Library has received approximately 100 suggestions to date. A number of these have been incorporated, including hyperlinking library names on the Find a Library page, having a search open to a tab instead of a new window if a user sets their browser to do so and having a content section open instead of collapsed when a page is visited. Please find a list of resolved and open portal issues here. All comments and suggestions will be prioritized by the Library Portal Working Group and the Library Portal Steering Committee on an ongoing basis.

Starting today, the preview site will be more widely shared—information and the preview link have been posted on popular Library resources pages, including HOLLIS, HOLLIS Classic, MetaLib+ and E-Research. Additionally, flyers, tent cards and business cards will be widely distributed throughout the libraries. Please download the flyer here, and anyone interested in receiving tent cards and business cards for distribution in their library may contact Elizabeth Hedrick.
